Top Cow and September Mourning Announce Kickstarter

September Mourning Marc SilvestriIf you’ve been following Top Cow and September Mourning the last few years then you know there has been a plan for a September Mourning comic book as part of a multi-media project.

This morning Top Cow and September Mourning has brought this comic book one step closer to their fans as they’ve now announced the launching a Kickstarter campaign the weekend of San Diego Comic-Con to raise funds to support the comic book for the multi-media project of the same name.

The comic book will feature the art of Marc Silvestri and Summeye Kesgin, is written by Mariah McCourt, and conceptualized by Emily Lazar (September Mourning) and Marc Silvestri.

“For me, the project is a story, a theatrical art piece,” September explains. “Music is the backbone, but for this to work, it has to include the imagery and the narrative all symbiotically linked into the whole. Music taps into your innermost being. There’s something very intimate and personal about it.”

And for those that are wondering why this is such exciting news, here is a little bit about who and what September Mourning:

The character of September Mourning is a human-reaper hybrid, who feels the need to give some human souls a second chance, and thus toys with Fate.

I first met Emily Lazar at San Diego Comic Con three years ago, at of course, the Top Cow booth. Since then I’ve followed the story and band waiting (impatiently at times) for this next step in the evolution of September Mourning to come about. Shortly after that first meeting I was able to sit down with Emily Lazar of September Mourning for an interview for Metal Life Magazine. Of course that meant learning more about who September Mourning was in Emily’s own words:

Metal Life Magazine: How much of your lyrics came from you specifically and how much are the story line you and Marc are crafting?

Emily Lazar: The funny thing about the story line is, although it has a fantasy element to it, it’s a Reaper, she takes souls and put souls into other people’s bodies. She’s a fictional character, but although it’s that, it’s very very very much based on me. On how I am, what I have been through in life. This character is very much me. The things, the trials and tribulations that she comes up against are all things that I have come up against in my life. That I’ve had to deal with. Whether it is anything from abuse, to like… there are just so many, I’ve been through a lot of crap in my life. I have a very wide platform to write from. In that respect, this story is my story, but it is told through a fantasy, fictional element. Which makes it magical, and makes it something that people can jump into, relate to and apply to their own world. I think everybody wants a second chance at life, and my character provides that. She provides that second chance, or a second chance at making things right. We all do something and we’re like… damn-it why did I do that? Or why didn’t I do that? Why didn’t I take that chance? Or why didn’t I just kiss him? We all have those moments, you know. Her story is all about the redemption of those moments. And what happens if you are given that chance to take that back. What happens to everything around you because of it. So it’s a really interesting concept.

But wait, didn’t you say this was a multi-media project? Why yes I did. And if you caught the mentions above, September Mourning is much more than a character in a comic book. September Mourning is also a band.

Band Lineup:
September (Vox)
Rasper (Bass)
Riven (Guitar)
Wraith (Guitar)
Stitch (Drums)

September Mourning has just recorded her debut album. It tells a story in 12 songs, an epic tale of “heartbreak, loss, pain, joy, love, redemption, but most of all, courage…” Produced by Howard Benson (Chris Cornell, My Chemical Romance) and mixed by Chris Lord-Alge, September Mourning revives the concept of rock star meets superhero. If Marilyn Manson and Lady Gaga had a kid, it would be September Mourning, who also cites influences as varied as Paramore, Motionless in White, Lady Gaga, and My Chemical Romance.

If you’ve never seen September Mourning live on stage you are missing out on amazing show. Emily Lazar’s (September Mourning) background in ballet carries through in her stage presence making a September Mourning concert the most graceful head-banging concert you may ever see.
